Who Are The Modern-Day Jews?

Romans 2:28-29 (NASB) says, “28For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.”

The Jews are seen in scripture as God’s chosen people as being descendants of Abraham, to whom God said his seed would be “as the stars of heaven and the sand of the sea” (Genesis 22:17). The sand of the sea represent a “natural” seed, and the stars of heaven represent a “heavenly” seed. So much emphasis has been placed on the natural seed of Abraham that we often overlook or underestimate the value of the heavenly seed in the sight of God!

Many in the church today have been strong supporters of Israel for various reasons. First of all, Jesus Christ came through Jewish descent, which is undoubtedly one reason why the devil hates and attacks them so much. Secondly, we know God blesses those who bless Israel (Genesis 12:3). Finally, the interpretation of eschatology among many in the church is based off of what happens to and within the nation of Israel! Some examples include Israel becoming a nation (Genesis 12:2; Ezekiel 37:11-14), and the destruction of the Temple, which is believed by many to follow after its rebuilding (Revelation 11:1-2). While some of these scriptures have already been fulfilled, such as Israel coming out of the Holocaust and becoming a nation on May 14, 1948, or the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. fulfilling the abomination of desolation (Matthew 24:14), since this event was to occur in that generation to whom Christ was speaking (Matthew 24:34). Interpreting Biblical prophecy with accuracy is of great importance, and when it conflicts with the purpose of Christ coming to earth and the message which He released, then it is time to allow the Holy Spirit to transform our theology!

Under the Old Covenant, the Jews are the natural descendants of Abraham. Under the New Covenant, the Jews are those whose hearts have been circumcised by the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are the born again believers! Galatians 3:28-29 (NASB) says, “28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.” We have an inheritance as sons and daughters of the Most High God because we are the “spiritual” descendants of Abraham, and not one person is better than the other. We are one blood in the Kingdom of God!

Colossians 3:9-11 (NASB) says, “9Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 11a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.” As long as we have surrendered our hearts and lives to Christ, then that is all that matters! And as a result, our mission should be to win and point people to Jesus, including the natural Jews. Jesus did not do away with the old covenant, but He fulfilled it (Matthew 5:17). This doesn’t mean that there are two distinct, separate covenants that existed, meaning the Jews have one way to get to heaven and the Gentiles another. If this were the case, then God the Father owes Jesus an apology because He went through a whole lot to suffer, die and resurrect from the grave if there was now more than one way to heaven! Hebrews 8:7-13 (NASB) says,

7For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. 8For finding fault with them, He says,
      “Behold, days are coming, says the Lord,
      When I will effect a new covenant
      With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
9      Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers
      On the day when I took them by the hand
      To lead them out of the land of Egypt;
      For they did not continue in My covenant,
      And I did not care for them, says the Lord.
10      “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
      After those days, says the Lord:
      I will put My laws into their minds,
      And I will write them on their hearts.
      And I will be their God,
      And they shall be My people.
11      “And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen,
      And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
      For all will know Me,
      From the least to the greatest of them.
12      “For I will be merciful to their iniquities,
      And I will remember their sins no more.”
13When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.”

While under the old covenant the blood of animals atoned for sin, under the new covenant the blood of Jesus atones for sin, and His blood speaks a much better word than that of Abel or any sacrifice ever made before He came on the scene (Hebrews 12:24). Therefore, the Jews of today are those who believe upon their LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Regardless of race, color or nationality, the only way by means anyone can be saved is through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). Natural Jewish people have to go through the same blood of Christ. Jesus did go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel first (Matthew 15:24), and on the Day of Pentecost, the initial focus was pointing the Jewish people to Christ (Acts 2:37-42), but they quickly learned the color line was washed away in the blood of Christ when Cornelius, who was an Italian centurion, and his family were baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:44). Jesus died and rose again so everyone can have the same access to the throne room of God in heaven. It is why there is no distinction between the Jew and Greek (Colossians 3:11; Romans 10:12). God is the same God for all of us to call upon. So, come boldly to His throne of grace and live for Him. You do not have to live below the means of your salvation based off your nationality, your history, the opinions of others or someone else’s religious standards! Just be devoted to God in a wholesome relationship, and He will be faithful to show and reveal His grace, glory and power to and in your life!
