Heavenly Citizenship in a Foreign Land

Hebrews 11:8-10 (NASB) says, “8By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.”

It can be difficult sometimes to be kingdom-minded in the world we live in today, but Abraham set the example of how we walk in faith and overcome. He had received promises from God not only about his seed being innumerable, but also of a land of promise. While being surrounded by idolatry and giants, it can be challenging to hold onto one’s faith in the promises of God, but Abraham also understood the importance of not only paving the way for generations to come of inheriting what God had destined for them to receive, but also reaching heaven and spending eternity in the glory of God!

Every believer’s goal should be to make it to heaven, but we do not just pray to be saved from hell and go to heaven! So often the church is focused on the importance of being born again and winning souls, which we absolutely should, but if this is the only message we preach, then we are really falling short of the whole message of the gospel of the kingdom. The only place in scripture where Jesus mentions concerning being born again was in a private conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:3, 7). Nowhere does He actually teach this publicly! Yes, we have to be born again, but being born again is the introduction into the kingdom of God and stepping into what God has laid out for us. The prayer of salvation is not the finish line, but rather the start of the race! We are not just sitting to the side, waiting to die to go to our heavenly home or for Jesus to return, but we are to function kingdom authority and blessings NOW!

The gospel of the kingdom is not just foreign to the world, but to the majority of the church itself! When we receive the Spirit of Christ into our hearts and lives, we enter into a royal priesthood, or a kingdom of priests. Our authority comes from our place of devotion to God and intercession! We can literally shake the heavens and the earth when we as the body of Christ decree things from a place of prayer. We can be as Abraham and walk in faith, speaking those which be not as though they were and being fully persuaded that what God said He would do He would perform (Romans 4:17, 21).

Regardless of what the news or social media is reporting, we can function in the kingdom of God and refuse to be dictated by what is going on around us! The promise of the kingdom is available for us to function in today through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. We will reach heaven and stand before the judgment seat of Christ one day, but we do not have to wait to die to get to heaven. Instead, we can have heaven on earth! That alone is worth being kingdom-minded!
