Flipped the Script

1 Samuel 21:10-15 says, “10And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? 12And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. 14Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me? 15Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?”

If there was a warrior in the Bible, it would have to be none other than David. His popularity grew in the nation of Israel as a result of slaying a giant named Goliath. He was not allowed to construct a temple for God as a result of shedding much blood. He was truly a man of war, and he had a divine intuition from God of escaping adversity whenever necessary. This story here is no different.

David’s life was threatened by Saul, and he escaped his hand of persecution and destruction. He actually fled to Achish, the king of Gath, for protection. However, after doing so, he was getting second thoughts, probably because this was a people who were enemies of Israel, and he knew deep down that he should not seek to make a covenant with them. This would be an act of rebellion against God Himself and the authority of Saul. Also, instead of Achish being willing to make an alliance with David, he may just kill David for simply standing in his presence. The servants of Achish recognized who David was, that he was a man of war, slaying multitudes of people. This motivated a fear in David because they may kill him to boast of their ability to conquer insteading of them fearing David because of the authority and power that God had given him. So, when they brought him before Achish, he acted like a mad man, or, in other words, crazy! He covered up his sanity by scribbling on the doors of the gates and allowing his saliva to run down his beard. He changed his behavior, which caused Achish to disregard and disbelieve that this was truly David. In fact, the king was mad that his servants even brought this man into his house! This was all because he changed his behavior in order to flip the script of the adversary!
