Favor in Potiphar’s House

Genesis 39:1-4 says, “1And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither. 2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.”

Joseph was a man filled with dreams and vision, but way before it ever came to pass, he had to work his way up. He had to undergo a season of preparation, and that season required his willing heart to be a servant. Even in a foreign and corrupt government, Joseph was willing to serve out of love and submission, and, as a result, he gained favor both with God and man. Potiphar’s house was blessed and prosperous as a result of Joseph just simply being there. Joseph obtained such favor in his sight that Potiphar made him oversees of his entire house. This was a great responsibility for an 18-year old, but his faithfulness to God was revealed completely in the way that he treated other people!

This is a lesson for all of us in the body of Christ. We may work or go to school in places that really have no respect for God, but we can still make a great impact upon a secular world by being willing to serve and submit to those who are in leadership in love. It is not about promoting our very own selfish ambitions or motives, but it is about showing the love of God with kindness. Nonetheless, we will walk in favor with God and man when we choose to serve. We cannot expect for people to respect us when we constantly preach at them or always go before leadership with all of these demands and requests we want done. It will never work! If we want favor, even in Potiphar’s house, we must serve, and it will lead to the next step of fulfilling the plan that God has for our lives.
