When the Earth Swallows You Up

Numbers 16:31-34 says, “31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.”

The men of Korah were a group of people who truly rebelled against the original order and plan of God. They spoke against the authority that rested over them, which would be Moses and Aaron. Due to their desire for position, they declared that each of them were equally holy, and, therefore, deserved a position. They were only seeking to motivate a revolt in order to solidify selfish ambitions. They had no truly good intentions whatsoever, and God proved Himself that He was for Moses by sending fire down upon 250 princes and the earth opening up and swallowing up the men of Korah. What a horrible legacy to leave behind? In an attempt to cause division, God Himself showed His greatness and struck it down Himself. When you defend God, He will defend you!

In the same sense, we must submit to the authority that is placed over us. Whether it is a pastor, boss, or parent, we must honor, submit to, and respect that authority, knowing that it has been established by God. Our desire for position can position us away from God if we seek to open doors for ourselves rather than wait on God to open it. Our greatest priority should not be to make a name for ourselves, but to reverence God in everything that we say and do! It does not matter if you believe you are holier than your Pastor, a greater singer than the praise and worship leader, or more knowledgeable of your business than your boss. Talent does not equal character! You must remain humble before God and submit to ALL of the authority He has established, regardless of whether or not you agree with it. Otherwise, spiritually you may become like the sons of Korah and be swallowed up by the earth. Maintain a sanctified and clean life before God by pursuing His holiness and taking that holiness upon yourself. By submitting to the authority that is over you, God will promote you in His time. Just trust Him and let your focus be to draw as close to Him as you can!
