The Source of Anxiety

Matthew 6:24-25 (NASB) says, “24“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. 25“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

Anxiety is something that all of us have to deal with at some point in our lives in one aspect or the other. It is the result of where we prioritize our love. If you love your kids, then you will be anxious over their safety once they are out of your sight. But once they become more independent and grow in the wisdom to make the right decision, then there is a peace that settles the anxiety. It revolves around building trust, which only comes through relationship. We become anxious over occupation, ministry and the world’s definition of success when our love for God in relationship is not first!

Love is demonstrated through devotion, and hate is shown through despising others. Despise means, “to think little to nothing of” (Thayer’s Greek Definitions). When your devotion is to wealth, making your business or name great, then you will belittle your relationship with God and family. The end result is chaos! But when your love for God and people becomes the center of your devotion, then that love will flow into your wealth! You will want to do things in the spirit of excellent, but making money or building success will not become your priority. Instead, your priority is shining and reflecting the glorious love of God! You do not have to worry about the provision of your daily needs when you are truly and faithfully serving God in all things! If you want to remove the seat of anxiety from your mind, be faithful in devotion in your relationship with God by spending time in prayer to hear His voice and learn from reading and studying the Word of God!
