The Need of Spiritual Fathers

1 Corinthians 4:15 says, “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.”

There are many preachers in the world, tons of them actually! Everywhere you go, you can find a teacher in the church of some sort, whether they teach the true gospel of Jesus Christ or a false gospel that has allowed the culture to infiltrate it. Some are there with good motives to help and encourage people in their walk with God. Others are there as a result of a career choice or to achieve some dimension of favor or spotlight within the community. Either way, many teachers exist within the church setting, but we have very few spiritual fathers and mothers in the body of Christ.

The Apostle Paul considered himself a spiritual father. A teacher is someone who teaches you how to solve the problem, and in a classroom setting, if someone gets out of hand, he or she may yell at the individual, discipline them, or send them to the principal’s office. Spiritual fathers and mothers help you with the homework by living the example on how to solve the problem! They love and encourage, but they also discipline and nurture whenever necessary. While teachers “teach up” a generation to follow Christ, parents “train up” a generation to be commpletely sold out to God! It is helping those who are newly converted in the faith to make the first steps of their Christian walk and walk on their own. We have enough teachers; we need spiritual fathers and mothers who not only win souls to Christ, but disciple them and help mature and grow as believers and in their calling before God!
