Get Back on Your Harp

Psalms 137:2 says, “We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.”

Psalm 137 is a chapter that focuses on Israel’s captivity to Babylon, and they were saddened and distressed. They had hung their harps upon the weeping willow tree. Weeping willow trees are absolutely beautiful, but that does not take away from their actual representation and purpose. The children of Israel had hung their harps upon these trees in a spiritual sense because it signified them surrendering and giving up their song in exchange for weeping, sorrow and pain. Instead of having a garment of praise, they were controlled by a spirit of heaviness. They no longer had a song on their hearts, but rather chose their covering under the weeping willows!

Today, many people feel the same way. They no longer have a song of joy upon their hearts. Instead, they are bound by depression, anxiety and fear. You can see it in their expression and attitude. They do not even try to hide it. They wear their sorrow as if it were a badge of honor. But in this scripture, God is telling His people, “Get back on your harp!” God is not dead, sad, depressed or worried, and neither should His children be. The devil is defeated, so why let Him rob you of your joy, blessing and peace of mind? We have hope and victory in God, and we need to shout it on the rooftops with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Regardless of whether you have the talent to sing or play music, do it with a joy unto the glory of God! It is time to get your song back! Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Psalms 30:5). Now is the time to sing again!
