Facing Temptation

Luke 4:1-2 (NASB) says, “1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.”

One thing about Jesus was that He was full of the Holy Spirit. He did not have to earn it, but it was about fully operating in who He was. His identity as the Son of God allowed Him to overcome anything the devil threw at Him, which sets the example for us that if we too want to overcome temptation, we must know who we are in Christ and be filled with the Spirit of God!

The best way to face temptation from the enemy is to be full of the Holy Spirit! He was able to say, “The Spirit of the LORD has anointed me” because He overcame the temptation in the wilderness. Jesus proved He was fully human by the mere fact He was tempted, for every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed (James 1:14). But when you are the manifested Word of God, you destroy every work of the enemy (1 John 3:8)! In the same sense, we must become a mirror reflection of the Word of God. It is more than quoting it, but living it. For so many people, we are the only Bible that they will ever read, and so we must keep in mind how we respond to adversity! God will always make a way of escape out of temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). It is up to us to recognize those doors of opportunity and step right through them. It can only happen when we view our struggles through the lens of God’s Word and foresee the reward of our victory!
