Can’t Curse What God Has Blessed!

Numbers 22:1-14 says, “1And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho. 2And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. 4And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me: 6Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed. 7And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak. 8And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam. 9And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? 10And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, 11Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out. 12And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed. 13And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you. 14And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.”

Baalam was a prophet during the time of Moses’ leadership, and the legacy that he left behind was completely tarnished as a result of his greed for money and worldly pleasure. With his lips, he expressed his desire to please God, but his heart was far from Him! (Matthew 15:8) Balak, the king of the Moabites, realized how God was with Israel and how successful they were in overcoming every enemy that stood in their way. When he sent for Balaam, Balaam told Balak’s messengers to stay the night while he sought the LORD. That is when God told him not to go because he could not curse what God had blessed! He did not go the first time, but as a result of the Moabites’ persistence in seeking for Balaam’s presence and his greed for the riches of Balak, he would eventually go. Balaam was seeking for God’s permissive will rather than God’s perfect will! He did not want to go because the Spirit of the Lord compelled him to do so, but rather because flesh lusted after that type of wealth. He was a prophet who sought to make everyone happy, including himself! God would not allow Balaam to curse Israel with the words of his mouth, which Balaam did not. However, he showed Balak how to curse Israel through provoking God to anger, which was by sending the most attractive Moabite women to the men of Israel so that they would come to serve the gods of Moab. This would take place successfully, and it resulted in the death of 24,000 people. This all came as a result Balaam’s compromise!

First of all, we must keep in mind that the enemy cannot curse what God has blessed! When we live for God in obedience to His Word, we are bound to a covenant that is bound to the supernatural blessing and favor of the Lord. That does not mean we will never experience struggle, but what that does mean is that we have someone who is on our side who is bigger than our struggle, and if we will stay focused and encouraged, we will overcome! While no one can curse us into destruction as believers and followers of God, the only way we can be cursed if we open the door to the spirit of witchcraft and curse ourselves through rebellion and disobedience! 1 Samuel 15:23 says, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” You can be rejected and cursed as a result of disobedience. Therefore, you must always keep your spiritual eyes open so that you do not fall prey to a trap of the enemy but rather walk in the blessings of God!

Secondly, we must not compromise like Balaam did. This prophet wanted to please everyone, and when you are truly seeking to please God, you will not please everyone else. As a matter of fact, you will make more people angry rather than happy, but it is better to offend people rather than the presence of God! It is about seeking God’s will for us spiritually and not asking His permission for us carnally. You must not be fearful but be more than willing to flow in a prophet anointing in order to make a difference in the lives of others. It is about being a blessing instead of being cursed!
