Asking God the Right Questions

John 4:10 says, “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”

Matthew 4:7 says, “Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”

Oftentimes, you may hear a particular religious phrase that seems to have no scriptural backing. People say, “It is a sin to question God.” However, I beg to differ. Many times do you read in scripture where someone asked God or Jesus a question. In order to find true answers, you simply have to ask questions. However, it is about asking the right ones!

Jesus simply said, “Everyone that asks receives” (Matthew 7:8). Therefore, if you want to receive an answer from God, even if it is supernatural, you can. God knows what we have need of before if we even ask, but He longs for us to confess it with our mouths and ask Him. That is why in John 4:10, Jesus told the woman at the well that if she knew who she was talking to, she would ask of Him, and He would give her living water. Many do not ask Jesus the right questions because they simply do not know who He is. They picture Him as the most religious man in the world when He actually was not. It is not a horrible thing to ask God questions, especially if you are in desperate need of an answer. If you will humble yourself and seek His face, you will find exactly what you are searching for.

There is one thing to ask God a question, but it is a whole different matter to tempt Him. That is what the Pharisees did. They questioned Christ’s ability, power, and absolute truth. When He was on the cross at Mount Calvary, the multitude tempted Jesus by questioning His position as the Son of God and His ability to come down off of the cross. These were great sins that these men and women committed. God proved Himself so many times in scripture, and Jesus Christ most definitely did because signs, wonders, and miracles followed and confirmed the ministry that He preached. He has proved Himself to us many times as well. Simply by looking at the beauty of creation and bringing me out of situations that I know required Him gives me the confidence in the God whom I serve. All you have to do is believe and trust in Him. When you ask Him, He will not lie to you. He will show you the truth, and it is the truth that will free you and give you a new and fresh beginning in Him!
