A Trip to the Potter’s House, Pt. 1

Jeremiah 18:1-6 says, “1The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 3Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. 4And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”

The Lord had spoken to Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, to take a trip down to the potter’s house because God was getting ready to give him a revelation. Jeremiah saw a potter molding clay on the potter’s wheel. However, the clay began to mar, meaning that it was becoming ruined or destroyed. The clay was at a place where it was not fitting into the potter’s vision or standards. Instead of the potter throwing the clay away, he put it back on the wheel and began to mold it once again until the potter was pleased with the new vessel. Then, God reveals to Jeremiah that this is like the whole house of Israel. They are just as clay in His hand. When they mess up or get to the place where they are operating in continual sin and on a path of destruction, once they choose to repent of their sin and return to God Himself, His grace would cover them and forgive them of their sins. He would transform them and showing them with His divine favor and blessings. Through repentance, Israel would be put back on the wheel and be molded into the very people that God had originally destined for them to become!

Just as with Israel, we are clay in the potter’s hands. It all began with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God spoke many things into existence, but when it came to man, He “formed” man into His likeness and image, meaning that He formed us as clay in the potter’s hands. He sculpted man into His image to walk, talk, look, think, and be completely like Him as His ambassadors on this planet. While sin has separated us from God, if we are willing to repent, God will put us back on the wheel. Isaiah 64:8 says, “But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.” We are God’s workmanship, created in His image. The reason why the enemy tries to fill your mind with these thoughts that you are ugly, incapable, and unqualified is because when he sees you, he sees God. Therefore, I encourage you to know your identity in Christ and that you are clay in the potter’s hand. If there is an area of your spiritual composition that is marred, ask the Lord to put you back on the wheel so that you can become the very person He longs for you to be. You may have made some mistakes in your past that it seems like you will never overcome, but forgive yourself and ask God to forgive you. As a result of your testimony, you can and will bounce back. The course from now on may be a little different than originally intended, but God will still get the glory, and He will still lead you to eternity in His presence. He will transform you into another vessel if you are ready and willing. It’s time to get back on the wheel!
